It just got a little easier to bring together databases in Oracle Cloud with workloads running in Microsoft Azure thanks to the launch of the duo’s multi-cloud database service.

Oracle and Microsoft announced that they are jointly launching a new service, dubbed Oracle Database Service for Azure, that will allow Azure customers direct access to Oracle databases running on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).

“Microsoft and Oracle have a long history of working together to support the needs of our joint customers,” Corey Sanders, Corporate VP of Microsoft Cloud for Industry and Global Expansion, said in a canned statement. “This partnership is an example of how we offer customer choice and flexibility as they digitally transform with cloud technology.”

The new offering allows for their common customer enterprises to run workloads across Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud to reduce latency. The offering is a managed service that enables enterprises to provision, access, and operate enterprise-grade Oracle Database services in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) with a familiar Azure-like experience. This means that enterprises can monitor Oracle databases right from within the Azure environment. Users can seamlessly build Azure applications with the high performance, high availability, and automated management of Oracle Database services, such as Autonomous Database, running on OCI.

“There’s a well-known myth that you can’t run real applications across two clouds,” Clay Magouyrk, EVP of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, said in a statement. “There is no need for deep skills on both of our platforms or complex configurations — anyone can use the Azure Portal to get the power of our two clouds together.”
